    Our Coaching Philosophy:

There are a wide variety of definitions for what coaching is and how it is used. The one we find effective and embrace begins with the belief that coaching is a partnership relationship. The client is the expert in their life. They have the answers within them. We are simply there to ask questions that take them below the surface so that they can source answers that have meaning and will motivate them to embrace change. We do this by raising the client's awareness of how they are responding to themselves and the word around them. We connect them to their values so their steps align with who they are and who they are becoming. And, we champion them towards their goals so that they don't lose energy or sight of where they are headed.

We have five underlying beliefs that are at the heart the coach-client relationship.

    • People prefer to be stretched and challenged.
    • People are more accepting of their own decisions.
    • People learn best through self-discovery.
    • People hunger for an accountability partner.
    • People have a purpose in life and at a deeper level want to manifest it.

Transformation occurs when the client's awareness is heightened, alternative perspectives are explored and a conscious path of action is taken. This emerges in its own time and own way. It cannot be rushed, predetermined, or guided in a certain direction. When the client is allowed to choose how, when and what for him or herself it becomes part of who they are not just another task to complete.

Today, coaching is a recognized discipline used by many professionals engaged in people development. However, as a distinct profession it is relatively new and self-regulating. There are six self-appointed accreditation bodies for business and life coaching: the International Coaching Council (ICC), the International Coach Federation (ICF), the International Association of Coaching (IAC), the Certified Coaches Federation (CCF), the European Coaching Institute (ECI) and the International Guild of Coaches (IGC). No independent supervisory board evaluates these programs and they are all privately owned. These bodies all accredit various coaching schools as well as individual coaches, except the IAC and ECI which only accredits individuals.

We are licensed by Minnesota Office of Higher Education. In addition, we are in the process of becoming accredited through the Federal Department of Education. We are the only school that is licensed through the state and we will be the first accredited through the federal government.

As it stands today, we are regulated by the state on a yearly basis. We follow the guidelines established for post-secondary schools. In most cases, this means that individuals can apply their coaching hours towards an undergraduate or graduate degree. In addition, once we obtain the federal accreditation, you will have access to student aid and grants.

Wellness Coaching Results

In 2007 and again in 2008 Learning Journeys had the opportunity to train wellness coaches in Cumberland, WI. The following are the results from their Healthier Cumberland Coalition initiative.

Results from Wellness Coaching:

8 (HLC) classes were completed: 76 total participants.

62 completed 16-week course
(76% female & 24% male)

53 participated in Metabolic Syndrome re-screening

Mean starting weight: 198.0
Mean ending weight: 186.4

Mean starting total cholesterol (TC): 192.4
Mean ending TC: 177.8

Mean starting low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C): 114.9
Mean ending LDL-C: 105.9

Mean starting number of metabolic syndrome risk factors: 2.5
Mean ending number of metabolic syndrome risk factors: 1.7

Three community classes are currently in session. More are scheduled for this fall. Additionally, two Cumberland worksites have offered coaching programs with HCC trained health coaches.

A survey was mailed to the 30 participants that had completed the four initial HLC classes in prior to January 2008.

Of those respondents that met a goal for weight loss during the HLC classes (n = 19), 68% report they've maintained their weight loss within 5# of what it was at the end of the class, 21% report having lost additional weight, and 11% report a weight gain 5 - 10#.

·Additionally, (a) 65% (n = 13) have increased or maintained physical activity levels within 15 minutes per week of what they were at the end of the HLC class; (b) 90% (n = 18) have increased or maintained fruit and vegetable consumption within one serving per day of what it was at the end of the HLC class; and (c) 75% (n = 15) have reduced or maintained the amount of fat grams they consume each day within 5 grams of what it was at the end of the HLC class.

Finally, 75% (n = 15) of respondents have attended at least one of the HLC maintenance classes initiated in February 2008 with 35% (n = 7) rating their helpfulness as "excellent" and 25% (n = 5) as "good".
